I left some live oak logs in my backyard, and since I live in FL, they started to darken/mold/spalt. I was disappointed at first…until I turned a bowl and saw the natural beauty that lay within.

I agree that is some beautiful wood. I never saw much use for live oak until I got a lathe. Nice turning.

Two nice bowls Matt, good start for your woodworking career. Do you watch Craigslist for lathes?

John, Yes I have been watching for over a year, and sometimes have seen a good lathe. However, being 15, I need to wait for the weekend when my mom or dad can take me and by then it is already sold. I originally thought I wanted a big lathe, but after much thought decided a good midi lathe would be better because I have never needed a longer bed, and really don’t have room for it. I am deciding between the NOVA comet II and the delta 46-460.

That wood is really beautiful, Do we get better looking when we age. I made my own lathe, right now I am making a large lathe, and plan on doing a blog on the construction. You might be interested to follow it even though a project like this is not what most people can do or have the resorces. It will qualify as a scrap iron lathe but will compete with the best of them.
