I recently completed this walnut mantle, it was a fun little project.
The client had a friend give them a couple boards of walnut. (second picture)
They decided they would like it to keep the live edge on that thicker piece. So to keep the theme going I cut the ends of the top board, mitered at the same angle as the front. Then I distressed each end so it would blend. Then to give it alittle more of an aged look I applied three coats of a special oil finish.
The client is really happy and the friend that gave them the boards is tickled that they were used so appropriatly.

This is a gorgeous mantle. Walnut is such a pretty wood and it machines beautifully. Nice job, Dave.

That is a great finish! So what is your special oil? You know I have my own little walnut project going on right now, and finishing walnut has always been difficult for me!!

Great use of the wood.
Did you have to do anything special to account for the heat or is it even a factor?
Makes me wish I had a fire place.
