hi,
this project was designed to transform a ‘70’s kitchen with an adjacent laundry nook into more of a room with a lot of natural light by adding a 12’ slider unit out to the deck and a 9’ double casement/picture window to embellish a fabulous view. my wife laura had always dreamed of having a banquette, and we were also able to design a spacious walk-in pantry. there are various materials utilized here from walnut to quarter sawn white oak to typhoon beuardeaux granite to travertine to recycled leather to seeded glass. we managed to incorporate little gadgets like a spice organizer to a lazy susan to a recycle center to a laundry chute that leads to the relocated laundry area located vertically below the kitchen, which was the secondary portion of the porject. new lighting and new trimwork along with new appliances round out the project, which took about three months to complete, much of which was evenings and weekends.
a project like this does not get done without the help of many. i wish to thank my friend joe for performing the heavy work like demo, structural additions, installation of the door and window, and drywall. elsa, for helping with the design and permit application. deenie, for assisting on the cabinet door fabrication. gustavo, for helping me install the cabinets. ricardo, for help on the electrical. javier, for doing the upholstery work. larry, for getting the granite work done. guillermo, for setting the travertine. kevin, for filling in the white oak floor where some old cabinets had been demolished. also, spooner’s woodworks for spraying the finish on the cabinet doors and table. and last but not least, laura for her patience and design in;ut, and our cat tigger for his assistance in project managing the job.

That exactly the work I do…Case work/Millwork. I love doing kitchen of this caliber. Only you and the homeowner actually feel the accomplishment. But it came out amazing and it looks very comfy.
Is it just me or does it look like the corner cabinet crown is not mitred? Did you do some funky architectual modern design , or is it just the pic

thanks for the positive feedback. to answer the question from getneds, yes, the crown is indeed not mitered. i did the casings on all the interior door jambs in the house in a similar motif, which have a white oak plynth block, walnut vertical casings, supporting a casing above the headers constructed out of a sandwich of white oak and walnut. i used the same angular design on a bookcase in another room as the china cabinet that sits in the corner of the kitchen. the china cabinet was the final piece i built in here, and was a real challenge, but well worth the effort. thanks for noticing, getneds.
