Hobby Bench

I needed a place to consolidate supplies and tools from some of my other bad habits. This bench was published in Woodsmith a few months ago. It fit what I wanted for a bench almost perfectly.

The top is from birch Woodcraft. I was going to glue up a maple top. I stopped at Woodcraft for something and when leaving they had about 20 of these stacked up at the door on special About $5 a BF. Thats about what I pay for maple here. One of those tops went home with me. The frame is maple. The drawer carcases are 3/4 birch ply wood from the BORG faced with maple. The drawers are maple with baltic birch bottoms. The drawer front use box joints. They are on wooden slides. Woodsmith called for the drawer back to be put in about 4” from back of drawer to allow for full extension on the drawers. I moved that to about 2” still get full access to the drawer length. The drawers were handfit with a little wax on the guides they glide open almost on their own. The finish is danish oil and wax. There were a lot of nibs in the oil when dry so put the wax on with 0000 steel wool. It came out like glass. It picked up a first place in the Ada County Woodworkers Artistry in Wood show. Looking forward to spilling glue etc on the top now.

Excellent work. You’ll enjoy pursuing your passions at this bench for a long, long time!

I hope I will follow your example soon!

Dutchy.
I’ll use it for flytying and fishing rod building. Those are two bad habits you want to stay away from. They lead to long overnight trips and beer. You also never seem to have enough boats and other tools.

Beautiful! I’ll bet my wife would love one of these for her sewing/craft room.
