By this time, I’ve semi-mastered the process of making wooden gears, so I thought I’d give some vintage Lego gears a whirl. Made in the mid-60’s by Sampsonite, the gears are more of an exercise in precision engineering that a child’s toy. Sadly, the current Lego kits are project-specific—build exactly this or that. These gears arrived at my door, in the original box, with no instructions or suggestions regarding what to do with them.
Dynamo Men Duet #2 is my answer.

You can watch the video here … https://vimeo.com/157079893

It makes me happy. :-)

Thanks, Rick !!!

As my lamps become more complex, I’ve actually been simplifying them.
The brass thingy on the front is a 3-way rotary switch.
It was a great find for me because I can now run my lamps …
Lamp on only
Animated characters on only
All on

The 16-rpm motor was originally designed for animated POP (Point Of Purchase) signs and displays.

Another beauty … but actually a grind of sorts!

Like the Lego gears.

John,

Another great built. I like the idea of the Lego gears and you are right that the original general Lego kits are hard to find. Keep up the inspiring work.

BRILLIANT IDEA !!!

I’ll have to make one for my kitchen counter that grinds coffee in the morning.
When the guys have produced the correct amount, the light goes on.

And who said there’s nothing left to invent? :-)

Cool John. Makes me a little dizzy watching it. Maybe Edison started out something this.

Maybe Edison started out with something like this.

He actually did, Dave. He tossed out the Dynamo Men and kept the light bulb idea for himself. :-)

I love it! You always seem to come up with the most creative performing lamps, and I’m always anticipating your next creation!

Thanks, Madts … or Tom.

For some reason, I’m just now seeing your bronto extravaganza. VERY NICE !!!

My version will be appearing in the April/May issue of Woodcraft Magazine. I actually like yours better, but I’m not telling them. :-)
