Small Coffee Table

Project by Russel posted 23 days ago 454 views 1 time favorited 22 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Not too long ago, Bell Forest Products had a sale on African Mahogany, and since I had never used it before, I bought a 20 bdft project pack. When it was delivered, I opened the box and was quite impressed.

Of course, so was the Mrs. who decided that she wanted a bedroom set made from it. Fortunately, 20 bdft does not a bedroom make (ducked that one). But it was beautiful wood so I added to my stash.

I just happened to put it next to some Curly Maple that I got from fellow LJ Barlow. And, boy did THAT look good. At that moment I decided that the two would be a table top. So, I made a table top. The only thing left to do was to build something to hold it up.

I thought that any more Curly Maple would be too much and I wasn’t sure that anything other than the mahogany would look right. The Mrs. thought the trestle would look nice and why would I argue with good taste? Thus, a small trestle base from African Mahogany.

The top is 16×30 and the table stands 18 inches tall. It’s finished with wipe-on poly. It’s a rather small coffee table, but we have a rather small house so it fits quite nicely.

The African Mahogany and Curly Maple look really good together and I have to thank Lumber Jocks for that. Without seeing all the projects here and being introduced to the variety of lumber, I would be limited to what I could buy at home depot.

How did you attach the field (maple) to the frame? It’s nice for newbies (and oldbies like myself) to see how things are put together. I think it would be a good deal for all of us to show some of that.

I don’t know what everybody is going on about,,, I think it looks terible, I can’t think of anything to do with that but use it for the wood burner so I’ll take it off your hands and dispose of it for ya. Hee Hee. O.K. before I get my butt kicked I’m just joking around. What can I truthfully say about this,,,, WOW Beautiful wood, beautiful contrast of wood, beautiful craftsmanship, beautiful table, as Bruce almighty sez in the movie BE-A-U-TIFUL, fine job there bud, thanks for sharing, now I got to put my socks back on. Jack, the trestle was the Mrs idea. I think it turned out really well. The top is simply a glued up panel, and thinking about it now I’ll probably do it different in the future.
