This box was made by me on commission by Maya03, on referral by one of the Lumberjocks. I would like to extend thanks for that referral, and am pleased to say that Clara is very happy with her box.
This box is to keep her Black Opal collection and is made out of Stinkwood, Hard Pear with Witels Burl on top. The little boxes were made out of Ripple Hard Pear with a glass top and is kept closed with magnets. There are more boxes with stunning designs to come, all designed by Maya03, and I will post them as I go along.

Exquisite box but what on earth is stinkwood??? Never heard of it but it sure looks nice. I see you are from S. Africa so probably it is a local wood? Also have never heard of Witel Burl or Ripple Pear – the latter I would imagine is pear wood with a curly figure?
Beautiful workmanship and photography. Wish I could get photos that nice of my work but my little digital camera just can’t do the details (maybe that’s a good thing in my case!).

Johan’s craftsmanship is indeed exceptional. I did some minor changes to the box like replacing some tan velvet pads with dark brown ones in order to bring out the colors of each stone.
Johan and I agreed on realizing something I started out as a joke drawn by a wave of enthusiasm following this beauty I had commissioned. So I designed quite a few boxes and asked him if he could turned them into real ones. I will be eager to receive your comments once Johan posts them for you to see.
Once again thanks all of you and this awesome site for helping make this possible.

Thank you to everybody for the compliments. All the woods used for this box are indigineous to the Knysna forest, which is situated in the Western Cape of South Africa. The name Stinkwood is given because of the smell when it is cut when wet. Another name for Witels is White Alder. Hard Pear and Pear are not the same wood. In South Africa, we also have Red Pear, White Pear, Coffee Pear and Thorn Pear. These are all indigineous hard woods. All these woods are all protected species and are not commercially available and can only be obtained at State auctions.
And to Studiousmatt …. I really don’t mind!
And to Clara – a very big thank you! I really enjoyed making your box!
