I built this toy chest for a baby shower. Hand cut dovetails, angled sides at 15 degrees, rounded top pegged into the sides, and my first attempt at silver inlaying. I printed off a graphic from ms word and spray glued it to the wood and then used the dremel to carve it out with a dreml router base and 1/8inch carbide down cutting bit. Then I undercut the wood a little freehand so the silver would stay in place. Then I glued in a replacement piece to fix the boo-boo I did between the J and the O when I was free handing it, then dremeled it again. Melted some silver solder on a spoon with a blow torch and dribbled the molten metal into the openings, sanded smooth and stained the oak walnut color. One thing I didn’t like about the silver was when I sanded it the silver flakes seemed to embed itself in the open pores of the surrounding wood making it appear dirty. Next time I think I will put down a coating of shellac before sanding, hopefully that will make the particles not stick as I could not get them out.
For finish I used some wax over a coating of hand wiped shellac and put on some cast iron handles, chain stop, and steel hinges, unfortunately I found out too late that the soft closing springs I had purchased only work with flat top boxes.
This is my second rounded top chest, the first one I rough sanded the pieces to fit in a curve, clamped each piece one by one over 2 weeks and used copeus amounts of putty. For this one I finally have a working table saw so I cut the sides at various angles to reach 180 degrees, then fitted them together with dowels, that worked pretty well, but I think next time I will make an inside side template to glue and peg them onto, should make clamping much easier.

After your pirate chest caught my eye, I thought this was Davy Jones’ locker…
