I wanted to build a shadow box for the Officer in Charge of my unit as a retirement gift. . He is an Infantry Weapons Officer referred to as a Marine Gunner. His rank insignia is a Bursting Bomb.

The box is 40 inches tall and 26 inches wide made out of a single piece of Red Oak and stained ebony to match the black color of his insignia. It has a 2 inch deep frame in the center of the Bomb to hold his Medals, Ribbons and Badges and a 13×13 glass viewing pane. It has a French Cleat on the back of the burst set flush with the back of the box it mount to the wall.

I spent almost 60 hours on the entire box. A little more than half of that time was spent profiling the flames above the bomb. I used an Angle Grinder to rough out the shape and then lots of time with a mallet and chisel adding detail.

That’s a very unique shadow box and you did a great job.
