Sycamore Hollow Form

Project by k9smith posted 28 days ago 204 views 0 times favorited 8 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I’m trying to improve my technique with both turning and finishing. This is another piece of sycamore 6” x4” dyed with red orange and yellow dye. Finished with 7 coats of sprayed lacquer. Hollowed to 3/16”, the shoulder was a touch thinner.

I love sycamore turnings; nice job! It looks great dyed. The only downside of Syc is that to me it smells like wet dog when working it. Was the dye water based? Did you leave it on to dry or wipe it off?

The smell hangs around for a while too. It is water based dye and I wiped it off with a wet paper towel after applying it.

Very nice turning. The dye turned out great also.

Keep it up.

Real nice turning. I like the color and the finish. When I first started turning I got a pretty good hunk of sycamore from a neighbor who had just cut one down. The piece I had was about 5ft long with a diameter of around 12”. I took my chain saw and cut it up into disks about 5” thick for turning. I was amazed when the next day the disks had all cracked radially, so the they were totally useless. Live and learn!
