Floating Shelves

Project by woody57 posted 26 days ago 405 views 3 times favorited 6 comments Add to Favorites Watch

These are some shelves I built for my son. They appear to have no support but they are actually anchored to the studs in the wall.

I ripped some mdf to 1 5/8”. I cut the shelves from 3/4” oak plywood. I then glued the plywood to the mdf with biscuits on three sides leaving one long side open. Then I applied bullnose oak trim to the edges of the plywood.

The oak is stained with a couple coats of lacquer. The mdf is painted black.

To mount the shelves I bolted a 2×4 on edge to two studs with 6” lag screws. Then I slid the shelves over the 2×4’s and attached the shelf to the 2×4 with finish screws. The finish screws are not visible from the floor and will allow easy removal of the shelf when the time comes.

What a great idea! Your shelves came out really nice, too. I’m gonna favorite this one.

Looks good and they must be strong with all those books on them. Your son appears to be a web programmer.

Thanks for the nice comments. I was going for something unique and with clean unadorned lines.
The random placement on the walls was my son’s idea. I would have lined them up. But, they turned out
nice and he likes them.
