First time back to Lumberjocks in over a year now I think. I took off most of last year to let my hands recover from carving chess sets for the last 20 years. During the year ‘off’ I added a 500 sq’ screened in porch to the house a new front deck with roof, cleared 5 acres of land and made about 15 chess sets, so I’m glad all that is over and I can get back to making chess sets again.

I absolutely detest ‘painting’ my carvings (mostly because I’m no good at it), but this one had to have it. The hardest part of this set was carving ‘Gators’ on the side of the football helmet knights in cursive in a space about 3/4” long and 1/4” tall.

Kings about 6” tall, pawns (the footballs) about 3” tall. Pieces hand carved from solid walnut and poplar. Chess board made from solid walnut and poplar at about 22” square. In making this set I have opened up a whole new line of pro, college, and high school themed sports themed sets. All I’ve made so far are ‘one-offs’ so I’ve managed to stay away from the cease and desist orders! lol.

Glad to be back and look forward to seeing all the great work you folks put out!

The coolest chess set I’ve seen. The American football theme is just not expected here. Colours are great too.

I wonder if there is a market for two long time rival teams on the same board. Of course there would be the need to select who is the home team.

Very nice. I understand how we hate to paint wood carvings but you have to have the team colors.
