I have been following posts of a lot of guys making two stage dust collectors… here are two that I made with a couple of cardboard drums that were being thrown out. Real simple design… cut a hole in the centre and on one side of the top and insert the hoses…thats is it.. works great…
First on is hooked up to the 2HP dust extractor and the other is hooked up to a cheap shop vac… only the very fine dust get through to the second stage.

now thats thinking ,
inside the barrel !
way to go , bro .
if the suck hose is higher up ,
and the dust hose is a little further down ,
most of the stuff ,
falls to the bottom !
great .

You guys suck! : ) I don’t even have this much room in my basement. Wish I did. It looks crazy, but it looks like it works. I think I’m just gonna die young.

Hi Larry..what if anything are you using for baffles or to prevent the dust from being sucked from one hose to the other ? Any “cyclonic” action going on here ? : )

No baffles but the intake hose is lower inside and angled along the side for cyclone type action. I only get a small amount of fine dust through to the actual dust extractor/vacuum

Looks like a real good system. If had more room I might try it.

I have done the same thing, but I was doing it so pieces of wood and the occasional screw would not hit the impeller or be mixed in with my sawdust trailer I had parked outside

nice i use something like that works great only the finer dust goes to the collector
before i bought the plastic lid i am using now i found that if i used a 4 inch 90 deg. elbow on the intake
inside the barrel it made a big improvment on air flow and colection

Thanks Larry. I’ve been using a plastic “cyclone” top and a metal trash can for a few years now and it is so nice to just empty the can versus having to change or empty the bag : ) Have a great day !

That’s a great idea Larry.
I used a similar system for years before I put in a central DC.
I’m seriously consdering putting a unit (2-1/2” hoses) back in for my routers.
The big hoses are just too much nuisance in many cases.
p.s. I had a leaf collecter bag inside mine to trap most of the dust.

Excellent job. I honestly wanted fiber drums for mine as they are MUCH lighter than plastic, but I was unable to find a source for them… (Unless I want to buy 5000 at a time, no thanks!).
Mine differ in that they are fitted with the Thien Baffle. I had poor luck with getting scrubbing from the dust bin (drum) back to the DC. The Thien baffle stops ALL of the large stuff, and MOST of the fine dust. I have filled / emptied my 55 gallon separator 3 times so far, and still have less than 1 cup of dust in the bag. My filter gets tapped down after every use as well to keep it from caking up too much…

I’ve breathed saw dust for 45 years now, why stop now.
Good job on the system.

Nice job. I don’t have a workshop that big nor that many tools. I do the old fashion way in the yard. Nice system…
