jig i made for cutting ovals, i used 3/4 mdf and cut dovetailed cross at 10 degrees and then cut oak blocks to slide into. in the photo, if you look i use drill bits as pivot points. so heres the formula. for width measure from the pencil to first drill bit. say you want it 24 wide then go 12 inches from pencil to the bit, then for lenght measure from pencil to second bit. so if you want it 48 long measure 24 to the second bit. you can add a router instead of a pencil and make perfect ovals every time. and i will add that by useing johnsons paste wax in the slots it glides like butter.

I think I need to borrow your design Blaine, and maybe add Jim’s idea. In the past I made my ovals by lightly drawing out grid lines, then using the grid as a reference for my oval. This looks like a big time saver if I’m going to make more signs. Thanks a lot.

a little over a year ago i had a contest with a cnc router operator and i could set up my jig and route my oval faster than he could program and set up.

I think I may need to borrow you design as well, and as for your contest I can believe that, I know of one local shop that has a row of inverted pin routers rather than any CNC equipment, they had a CNC but the guys on thr pin routers could cut out anything needed faster then the CNC could, CNC’s are good but its nice to know on some things us humans still have the upper hand, thanks for the post.

Blaine – I have a CNC and can’t figure out why the guy made that bet with you.
cstrang – On another site I read about how guitars are made using a pattern router with human interface. Was really interesting and the speed they accomplished the guitar body was amazing.
Another point is that unless you have significant money to throw at the CNC setup for a huge one, nothing can compare to the flexibility of feed tables or saw horses with a simple fixture.

Blaine,
Your jig is going to come in real handy for me. We have a kitchen table top that has some significant distress on one section of the edge (don’t ask). I’m going to use your jig to mount on the back side and cut a new edge with my router or scroll saw. Didn’t really know how to approach this before seeing your post.
Steve.

Looks great. Sliding dovetails are a nice touch.

great idea, intriguing concept. My free hand circles look a lot like ovals but with this jig, I can be precise. Thanks for the post.
