mal·let (noun)
a hammer with a large, usually wooden head, used especially for hitting a chisel.

Yup! That’s what I got.

My son and I bought a lathe yesterday (our first) and I couldn’t wait to use it. So, I grabbed a piece of a 4X4 and another piece of 1X1, both out of the scrap bin, and this is what came out.

I’ve never used a lathe before, so I really didn’t know what to expect. It is different than other woodworking I’ve done. There is considerably less moving around the shop from tool to tool. I had to do something I’m not very good at, slow down. This is something I’ve struggled with in all things. Just finding that balance between concentrated energy and peaceful, steady, progress toward a goal.

I enjoyed this very much. You can be sure there will be a lot more round things in my future. I can’t wait to integrate this new functionality into other types of projects as I learn more.

“Finding the balance between concentrated energy and peaceful, steady progress toward a goal.”

I like that—this is what woodworking has become to me of late. The fewer power tools I use the better because things are more peaceful and less messy and I am more in control of the process.

Btw, your mallet looks lovely. I do not have a lathe but the thought of turning wood very much interests me. I would need to build a station to put one though and I’m not sure I have the space!

And a very handsome mallet it is too!

Totally understand the ‘slow down’ thing. New to woodwork/turning and only have 1 day a week with access to a lathe so always a dilemma what to have a go at and always watching the clock. Need to slow down and enjoy the process.

What kind of projects did you start with? Had you been taught prior to this?

Have your say...
