That's a wrap.

Just finished up this custom mantel. Built to resemble the look of hand hewn cabin beams stacked on the wall. Each beam is hollow and stacked on one another to create this unique wrap around fireplace mantel. Made from red oak, I used a hand plane and draw knife to achieve the hand hewn look. The end pieces were carved with a dremel tool and carving bit. I carved “growth rings” and cracks to give it the appearance of a solid wood log and not a hollow beam. I used a dark stain on the end pieces to get down in the cracks and then went back with the final stain color to give it some contrast. Finished it off with a satin polyurethane.

That looks really nice. You definitely achieved the rustic look you were after.

I really like the endgrain treatment that you gave the wood. An authentic look of old wood. Good job.

VERY nice! I especially like the end grain treatment. Well worth the considerable effort you expended on this one.
