My first pens

Project by Darell posted 32 days ago 309 views 0 times favorited 14 comments Add to Favorites Watch

These are the first pens I’ve turned after setting up my new lathe. The first batch were the slim kits from the starter kit I bought at Woodcraft after taking their pen turning class. I don’t know all the woods from that kit. The second batch of four are mini click pens from PSI. First one from left is an acrylic orange blank, then bocote, kingwood and zebra wood. The third batch are European style pens from Woodcraft. They are tulip wood, kingwood, blue acrylic, purple heart and walnut. The last set is a European style pen and pencil set turned from orange acrylic. Most of the pens are finished with CA glue. A few are with the wax finish. Wish the pics were better but I’ve yet to figure out how to take close ups of small items. Still playing with the lathe so will post more in a few days.

Very nice! I’ll be taking a woodcraft pen turning class tomorrow night. Hope my pens turn out just as well! How long did it take to make all those?

Nice pens. I just got into turning pens and I am really enjoying it. I just got a lathe and can’t stop turning. Have fun and keep up the good work.

I turned all but the miniclick pens over a two week period working between 2 and 4 hours at a time. Yes, they are addicting. I turned the miniclicks in one afternoon. They’re pretty simple. I’m still learing things though and that’s part of the enjoyment.

Great group of pens. You are progressing very nicely with these pens. All are fine looking.

Keep it up.

I am buying a Jet mini lathe, specifically to start turning pens as I have gathered that this is a great way to start learning how to turn. Can anyone give me a short list of the absolute necessary tools to turn pens with and where I might be able to find a starter set relatively cheap to begin with? great job on your pens and thanks in advance for any advice.

Darell: The pens look great. A nice job on your first turnings. (That’s not to say that they could be better) They look fantstic.

I remember my first pens. Didn’t want to stop. It was so much fun. Made pen and pencil sets for all of my family.

Keith, you can find pen starter kits at www.pennstateind.com, They have starter kits both with and without a lathe and turning tools. Penn State also has a free pen turning DVD that my be helpful. You can also go to youtube and search pen turning videos there. There’s lots of informatiion out there for the looking.

Thanks for the kind words Karson.

Eddy, I saw your daugthters pens a few days ago and have kept some of her work in mind for future pens. I especially liked the ones with different woods for the bottom and top. Those caught my attention right away.

Hey, guys, first question… I havent figured out where best to post yet, so hope you dont mind. maybe link here and I will post there from now on. in any case, I bought some would samples that are 6×3 x 1/2. I just want to know if I can make slim line pens out of these samples or if the 1/2 by 1/2 blanks will be too small. thanks!
