Oak body with walnut and padauk strips, walnut miter keys and dividers, from “Box-Making Basics” by David M. Freedman. This box was a lot of fun and challenging to make and I’m very pleased with the results, probably the best box I’ve made to date. Finish was three coats of Armor-Seal and a coat of wax. During the finishing, I discovered that the padauk was not taking the finish; I wiped just the padauk strip down with acetone and applied a 1 lb. coat of dewaxed Seal-Coat shellac. The finish then laid evenly and dried on the padauk. The two top sections rotate on 1/8” brass pins at opposing corners.

Good job Jim. This really caught my eye because I made the exact same box last year with the same wood species! I agree that it was a lot of fun to make. I still remember the hesitation and rechecking of everything before I cut the lid on that diagonal.

Great job. I love the design—- I did the same box and learned a lot doing it. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/3509
It was a great project for learning – especially had a job learning the pin placement.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi: Like Betsey I am doing the same box as I learn from each box I do.
My first mistake was placing the pin in the wrong ends.
Next i have to replace the pins as the box is not quite square.
It’s indeed a real learning process but worth the effort.
Will post mine when complete..

Jim this is a nice box and I enjoyed seeing the way the top opens up. I am definately going to have to put one of these on my list.

bigike, the plans are in the book “Box-Making Basics” by Scott Freedman. Check your local or state library, they may have a copy.

Great box. Love the choice of woods. Thanks for the tip on finishing the paduk. Love the lid double swing out.
Keep it up.
