This is another combined effort project – a chainsaw carving by Bob Eigenrauch with detail carving and painting by Stanley Saperstein. Team efforts often come into place with large scale sculpture projects that come into our shop.
This piece was commissioned and donated by one of my Jr. High / High School teachers who retired after 32 years of service. The Jr. High mascot is a wolf – thus this carving resides in the main lobby of the school to represent school spirit.
Material is solid poplar – a glued up large scale block of kiln dried wood for interior display. The rough work is all done with a chainsaw. Sanding and shaping with various power carvers. Then the fine detail is all completed by hand using a variety of 18th century carving tools. This was a detailed realistic wolf including facial detail, teeth, eyes, and a heavy concentration of realistic fur.

thanks for the post eric, you and your dads work is always so great….youve made and done projects that always enliven me ..the bar you jusr showed was a work unsupassed i believe…...this timber wolf will be around for many years…and im sure all involved are inspired by it….thanks for sharing it with us.

Eric, this is an amazing carving. It is rich in detail and the finish is so life-like. This was a both a beautiful and thoughtful gift by the retiree. Teachers are woefully underpaid and underappreciated for their time and efforts. To make a donation to the school with a gift of this magnitude speaks volumes about the dedication of your teacher to the profession.
Thanks for the post and the story behind it as well. I have often said that the story, at times, is as important as the build itself.
