Greetings All,
This is my first posting of a project since becoming a member here at Lumber Jocks. I hope that I do this correctly, I’m still learning the ropes here!
My favorite thing to build is 3D wall art. Recently I completed 5 pieces of a series that I call “Self Portrait”. The first piece in the Self Portrait series is made of mahogany and purple heart. The teeth on all of the pieces are made of poplar with a white wash that leaves the grain exposed. All of the pieces are finished with 8-10 coats of clear satin lacquer. All of the pieces are 18 1/2 wide X 11” tall and 3 1/4” deep.
Here’s a photo of the first piece in the series:

The second piece is made of purple heart. Here’s a photo:

The third piece, my favorite of the these first 5 pieces, is made of black walnut and purple heart. I got the walnut from the scrap pile of a nearby sawmill that also has a kiln. Here are two pics of this piece, one showing an angle view so that you can get a sense of the 3D effect:

This is the angle view:

The fourth piece is made of eastern red cedar, locally harvested and air dried in my barn. This piece is sold. That means that it’s a favorite, also!

Finally, the fifth piece in this series is made of mahogany and cedar.

I hope that you’ve enjoyed my first project posting here at Lumber Jocks. Comments and questions are welcomed. Thanks for looking!
Stephen

Very interesting. At first when I looked I thought it might be reflective of northwest coast totems… but I see you are from Tennessee. My second thought was that it reminds me of the mouth in Rocky Horror Picture Show (minus the tongue)....
