It’s been over a year for me and finally i remember to take some pics so I can now formally join the LJ club ;)
The big one is 26×18x2 and the smaller one is 18×12x1. The smaller one was originally 1.5 inches thick, but learning how to make a proper juice groove fixed that to a little over 1 inch ;) Finished with General Finishes Salad Bowl Finish and mineral spirits (ala theWoodWhisperer – thanks man!)
The many posts of all the excellent cutting boards here gave me enough confidence to give it a try so I did… learned lots and have taken notes on which order of operations makes things easier to do and when they should be done – not that it stops anyone from doing it a harder way out of order ;)
These are alder end grain boards. I scored a huge load of alder boards and 2×2 turning blanks (originally meant for piano bench legs) from craigslist. these were made from the 2×2 turning blanks. I decided to put a decorative edge detail on them. I would’ve put a fancier one on the big board but I made the finger slots too big (or the board not thick enough) so I could only do a round over with a lip. Sanding the juice groove was difficult until I borrowed my kid’s big pencil and wrapped the sandpaper around it (but my fingers are raw from trying before that). The finger grooves where made using a triton router and the micro adjust makes the climb cutting a breeze (unfortunately I have to call them for support since the micro winder doesn’t work right when its in the table – have to compress it for the gears to catch for it to wind)
These are a surprise gift for the wifey’s bday in next week so don’t tell her!
The next one will be a super thick butcher block table for the bbq area very much like the Boo’s Blocks tables that the pro chef’s like so much.
Thanks for looking
-adam

I like the boards and haven’t had a chance to work with Alder yet. I like the color change after you finished them.
Regarding diluting the Salad Bowl finish with Mineral Spirits :
According to the MSDS on this product , it is already more than 60% Mineral Spirits…..Is the SBF really that thick in the can or what is the benefit of reducing it even further ? I’ve always used straight Mineral Oil , but recently have started to blend it with wax and it leaves a nice sheen on the wood. I would like to have a harder finish on my boards , but once you start to actually cut on them it pretty much destroys the harder finishes.

whoops.. i just read the instructions on the can.. it does not need to be thinned out with mineral spirits like in the video by thewoodwhisperer.. he demo’ed with a can of behlens and I followed those video instructions instead… my bad… I’ll just recoat a few more layers on the normal way…
