This is just a simple oak stand I made for an aquarium I got off craigslist a few weeks ago. The stand that I got with the aquarium was old and made from particleboard like the last picture above. I forgot to take a picture of before I trashed it, but you get the idea. It wasn’t something that you would feel safe putting 500+ pounds of anything on, much less an aquarium filled with water. Especially when it’s inside your home!
Anyway, I had some oak in my shop that I recently got for pretty cheap from another craigslist ad, $1.50/bdft IIRC. I also bought the Multi-Sided Glue Joint Router Bit set from MLCS to cut the angled joints, very nice!

not to mention you saved a bundle.. your right the ones they sell are made so cheap.. great looking stand.. i usually add a side switch for lights.. never had a hex (or a hex fish).
