I had seen that another Lumberjock liked to make shrooms as “therapy”. Since I had only turned one other project before… a mushroom looked like an attainable sculptural challenge.
Here are two that I completed this afternoon. I ended up taking my sweet time.
These are made from blanks that I created from 2×4 scrap. I know I should be careful in the future about turning treated wood… but it was all I had lying around for the moment.
They are about 2 inches tall. The one on the right is my first attempt. The one on the left looks more like a button mushroom.
Would like to make more as little gifts for people to put on shelves or in house plant pots…. I left them unfinished and I may sand the tops and bottoms a bit more.
This is an easy project for an absolute beginner. I probably totally abused my tools when making these. I forgive myself… I have no mentors.

Nice job for your first turnings. I have bought a number of books & dvd’s to try to master my lathe. They have been informative but I have taken two local bowl turning classes & found that it was money well spent. The biggest advantage is you have someone to ask questions. Also the more time I spend on the lathe the more I seem to learn. There are some great turners on this site and most share their knowledge and for sure they inspire. Keep up the good work.

Wow!.
Turning mushrooms are like a tonic. Make a few, and your blood pressure goes down and your self esteem rises. Your friends appreciate the novelty and personal effort.
A Win-Win effort.
Congrats

Great SHROOMS!!!!! Love to turn mushrooms. They can be all shapes and sizes and still be the beautifull.
Great project to start on. My omly concern is for you to watch the inside of the cap. When you get towards to top/stem inside it is easy to get grabs with the tools. You are working 2 edges at the same time(the inside of the cap and the top of the stem) so be carfull.
I have found that watching a lot of videos helps if you don’t have time/money for classes. If you can find a turning club in your are you might make new friends with turners that are willing to teach/give tips or just to bounce questions off of like LouCarb said.
Congrats on a great project and hope to see lots more turnings comeing.
Keep it up.

Nothing wrong with turning mushrooms. These little things teach us lots, and more important; they are fun to make. Try some out of branches from trees that have blown over. You can find sticks almost anywhere you look….. Leave a little bark on the outside of the cap for an awesome effect. Turning is very additive. but also very rewarding….......... Keep the curls flying and have fun….
