This was a project I was building up courage to do for a while. I finally took it on this past winter/spring. I looked at hundreds of designs everywhere before coming up with this look that incorporates a few things from some of my favourites. Most of our bedroom furniture is birch veneer (a.k.a. Ikea) so it was nice to not only match it somewhat closely but also have something made of real wood.
I built the main structure and shelving out of pine and then used my favourite birch veneer panelling as the sliding cabinet doors with finger pulls. I varathaned it with clear coat water-base which made the two different woods match closer it seemed which was great.
I made the shelves inside adjustable to about 12 different heights so you can fit a few books, an alarm clock, magazines, food, beer, remote control, wrestling mask :-) or whatever in there basically. I also cut out a small hole in each side to run the electrical cords in for alarm clocks and lights.
I had an idea to make the lower part open up as storage too but this was enough for me at the time and it wouldn’t have held much anyway nor been easy to access either once the bed was against it.

Now that your done I bet it feels good. Nice job.
My wife has been pushing me to build a head board for 3 years now. Eventually I will get to it :)
Now you need to move the vent in the floor :)

Thanks guys, it definitely feels great to be done. That first night we slept like babies…I think the varnish must not have been quite dry yet ;-)
snowdog, I did some creative work with the vent actually and built a homemade “tunnel” system for the air to travel out the sides of the bed. Basically I took a 5’ aluminum vent stack and reformed it into a half circle by unhooking it. I then pushed it down low to the ground so that the top was about 2-3” off the floor and positioned it over the vent. Now the air travels up into the tunnel and makes its way out the sides of the bed. It’s not pretty, but it gets the job done and is hidden by the bed anyway.
