Shoe Rack

Project by WoodTookSoLong posted 41 days ago 555 views 1 time favorited 6 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I had finally had enough of cheap shoe racks that fell apart and held about four pairs of shoes so I decided to make my own. I dreamed it in my head and jotted some ideas down on paper to come up with this design. I wanted something that could be adjustable and hold all shoe or boot sizes so I made the slots removable. You can slide out any of the 1/4 pieces to accommodate any shoe height.

It’s made of pine and I covered it with a transparent brown stain to match the mirror and shoe box in the front hall (and to hide any of my blemishes :-)

It was first venture using a dado bit to cut the slots and I was surprised that they all lined up when I was done. It wasn’t as tough as I thought. I’ve never done any real joints so it’s a little rough on the corners, plus I had to squeeze it together a bit because of a slightly warped piece I used. I put some plastic sliders on the bottom so that it glides nicely across any surface to be accessible when needed or slide behind the door out of sight. Now if I could only build about 10 more for the rest of my wife’s shoes :-)

The more precise you are with each cut the easier it comes together in the end. Call the corner “artistic imperfections” and I bet she loves it.

Nicely done. A co-worker has asked me to make a shoe rack for her. She said she wants doors on it but I will still show her your creation to see if she is interested in any of its features, particularly the adaptability of slide out shelves.

The slide out shelves area great idea. The shoe stool I built a bot ago does not allow me to put boots in it. I hear ya on the additional ones you need to build though. I no sooner go all of the shoes stowed and 3 more pairs appeared.

a1Jim, some of those shoes deserve some torturing after the smells they’ve emitted!
