The photos don’t really do this piece justice. There is a problem with my camera- the yellow shadows that show on the piece are not really on it. It looks and feels like a piece of glass. I turned this from a piece of osage orange, sanded it through 400 grit paper and then applied alcohol based red aniline dye while it was still on the lathe. I let the dye dry, buffed it with 600 grit paper and applied another coat of red dye with just a little bit of blue dye mixed in. Finished turning the foot, dyed that and let it sit for a day. Finish is four coats of clear high gloss wipe on poly applied with a clean tee shirt rag. Let the final coat of finish dry and then buffed it up with the Beall wheel. The piece is 9 inches tall, 6 inches across and just shy of 1/4 inch thick. Hollowing was done through a 1 1/8 inch hole.

Well done. Is the Osage an open grain wood?

I would expect that Osage Orange is rather tough to turn… although I am not a turner… I just remember attempting to help make fence posts from the thorny and tough wood… grrrr…. I hated that work. But, it lasted forever… (we called it hedge apple or native hedge)
nice job… nice coloring… great result.

Beautiful turning, beautiful color too. You need to make a little box out of white paper like trifern did and he uses a 2400 watt light to photograph his hollow forms. Probably a new camera wouldn’t hurt too. Maybe not with the light. Just trying to help.

Great looking piece. I like that dye color. I have to agree with Mike on using a white background and maybe a light for taking the pictures.

I guess I will take the time to build a photo box with a white paper background. Thanks for the recommendation.
