hey everyone,
I turned this bowl especially for celebreting my 1 year anniversary on Lumberjocks! I’d like to say thanks to everyone thats helped me out and to Martin for providing such a great site for us!
This bowl was a first for me. I’v never turned a burl before and let me tell you, there HARD! I suppose its like turning red concrete….
This bowl is turned from Red Mallee Burl from Australia. It’s about 170mm wide and about 30mm deep.
Finished with Scandinavian teak oil.
thanks for looking
comments and critiques welcome

Nice bowl. I have tried to turn the same thing and I agree that wood is VERY hard. Nice work.

Master Broda I wish you many more.. anniversaries and bowls.
This bowl is exception… just one thing… the edges are a little rough… LOL
Very nice and I still will be wanting some lessons from you.

I just love red mallee. I haven’t seen any in real life yet, but it always stops me in my tracks when I’m looking through turnings online. Mallee is a Eucalyptus. I have about 1000-1500lbs of an unknown euc here waiting to be sawed up through October and November (hopefully I can get through a lot of it by December), and I know from the one large log I actually resawed manually with a crosscut saw that it’s a nightmare. It was only about a <1>m not quite to the 3/4 year mark yet.

Thanks, Broda. Aside from some very nice bee’s wing figure, it all looks to be fairly uniform in color. It won’t be very striking stuff like your mallee burl (not even close!), but it should make some solid slabs and turnings. I’ll post as I go, of course :)

Here's a shot I found online of some bee’s wing in Eucalyptus. It’s kind of like bands that undulate in sine waves, each a little out-of-phase with the ones around them. I believe it’s what creates interlocking grain, that continually reversing grain direction. There are a few other figures shown here. I have a hard time keeping them straight. I have a book on veneers that lists a few more, IIRC.
You can see some bee’s wing at the tip of one of my chunks here, though a bunch have it. They’re all from the same tree cut 3 years ago, free from several listings (from the same guy/same location) on craigslist. He keeps occasionally adding more and reposting. I’ve been back 3 or 4 times now. There are a few more huge ones – about 5 or so – that I and everyone else so far has left behind, because they’re just too big. The largest one I got is over 230lbs, but there was at least one, maybe 2 there this last trip that had to have been closer to 300lbs. My fortified ramps and dolly weren’t good enough. I picked up a bike pump so I could finally inflate the dolly wheels, and a little $25 hand-crank winch that can handle up to 1200lbs that I’m hoping to find a location for in the bed of the truck so I can winch the dolly up the ramp. It’s too steep for me to get any kind of footing trying to drag that much weight up it. I gave it a try, but no dice.

I hope all your eucalyptus has nice figure like that in it. It would make some nice bowls
Thanks for the info.
