I made a batch of these in the 1980’s for my kids, and my brother and sister’s kids.
The reports I got back was the kids played with them so much, they wore them out :)
Now there is a new batch of kids, so I cranked another batch of 12 toolboxes and tools.
The old-fashioned hand-cranked drills really turned out nice, and I made a youtube video showing them in action.
To decorate the tools, I used a neat technique, I think I learned from an old lathe book in the early 80s. You simply hold a piece of baling wire against the piece and burn in a decorative groove. You sand the piece a little after burning, and it really looks neat. Nice thing about it, no painting is required to add the decorative groove. I made a Youtube video of how I burned the decorative grooves, but it is tough to see the smoke in the video….......
There is a more humorous version of how to burn the grooves with wire on this Youtube video…...
My design for the toolbox and tools is on the Google Sketchup warehouse here.
To see how I built these toolboxes and tool sets, see my woodworking web site.
