We decided to refinish our bathroom and my wife suggested that I make the vanity and cabinets (she didn’t have to ask twice!). This was my first woodworking project using cherry and I must admit that I love how the “wood works”! To overcome the blotching that occurs when finishing cherry, I sought the advice from my local Woodcraft shop who suggested a wax-free sealcoat, then gel stain, then several poly finish coats. I really like how it turned out.
We designed the vanity ourselves in order to fit the available space and to utilize the glass bowl and faucet we liked. My wife also suggested embedding the cabinets in the wall so as not to make the room look smaller.

Very nice! What kind of gel stain did you use?

This is a beautiful vanity set. Cherry happens to be my favorite wood to work with so I can well understand why you enjoyed building this set with it. Putting the medicine cabinet in the wall was a great space saving idea. You have a nice design on the vanity as well.

Really nice! I have plans to re-do my bathroom in cherry also. Would like to know the dimensions of the cabinets and how they where installed.

Thanks for the kind words!
The gel stain I used was “Georgian Cherry” from General Finishes. It was the first time I used gel stain and I will definitely use it again – one door didn’t come out the way I wanted and I simply sanded off the stain and re-applied it. It doesn’t soak into the wood so it came off easily. Plus you don’t have to wait before wiping off the excess – you put it on and wipe it off.
The dimensions of the vanity are 24”W x 20”D x 31”H. I’m tall (6’-7”) and wanted the extra height so I wouldn’t have to bend over so far to use the sink. I wish my table saw was higher, too!
