Project Information

This is an outdoor ice chest, I have been making these for several years. It is made from old wind blown privacy fencing and a 48 quart ice chest. These are also some new experiments in candle holders. Can you guess what type of skull this is?

I used to make a lot of outdoor furniture from recycled fencing. People would throw it away and replace it because 'it got gray'! Most of it was as good as new once it was cleaned up.

So, I'm wondering why you bothered putting an actual ice chest inside the ice-chest!? Why not just line it with foam insulation? I remember my uncle used to make 'em like that. Kind of like a SIP panel but 40 years before it was invented.

I second the opinion that it's a snapping turtle.

Looks like a tortoise/turtle.

So the thing withstands the elements?

I've recently seen these chests at the Orschelens. The only difference is the the price tag, compared to what you built it for I'm sure. I think it looks great. I really wanted one of these but talked myself out of it. Maybe when I stumble across some weather wood again. Thanks for posting this.

Okay I see I am not the only one with that idea… I have been contemplating making one of those for a couple of years. I see them at Academy all the time, but they are never big enough… Always something small like 30qt. I want to build one from a 60QT cooler… And I have just the right metal trim for it. A pre antiqued Texas star and some rope…

Nice build, certainly looks useful. May be something I consider for my new deck furniture next year. Thanks for posting.
