Folk Art Fish

I’ve seen folk art stuff like this at shops and craft fairs selling for as much as 450.oo (really). So when I was given this chunk of Hemlock beam I just knew what it had to be. I did most of the carving with a four inch side grinder, and used some leftover copper flashing to make the fins with. It looks a little goofey . I didn’t have a pattern so I drew it as best I could, and used some teddy bear eyes I found at a local craft shop. But ,hey, I guess thats what makes it folk art! The darn thing still hangs with pride on the front porch of this old fishermans house. Beginning size of wood was 4X12X50inches long, finished product is 4 ft long. As you can see I’m not much of an artist, I,d like to develope my painting skills a lot more when I get into more detailed fish carvings. For a grand total of about 10 bucks I became a rookie folk artist and had a lot of fun doing it.

It is in fact art since you created it. It is a great looking piece and gives your home a very special look. I hope you make more of this kind of stuff and post it so we can see it.

I think it’s beautiful!!! Looks like Northwest Indian art to me. I used to live up in Poulsbo Wa. and this would sell for Much More than $450 there! A lot of their fish sculptures are painted black, red, and turquoise together. I think you’ve got a possible business going there. :):):) Intentional or unintentional, the mouth definately looks like a salmon. More carving and pictures please:):)
