I’m thrilled to finally be finished with this project. The finishing process took forever. I painted the cabinet with several coats of red latex paint (by several, I mean 5), sanding in between coats. I then used a dark ebony stain as a glaze on top of the paint, followed by a coat of water based poly. This process worked great on the case, but the doors came out looking horrible. I plan on refinishing them, but I’ll live with them for a while. I’m ready to build some other projects (that don’t involve paint). Aside from the finish on the doors I’m happy with how this piece came out. I learned a great deal form building it. Thanks for looking.

Really, this is a beautiful cabinet. What wood did you use to paint on?

I can’t see what you do about the finish on the doors. You did a fine job!

Very nice. Anything special about the F-4 on the TV in the photo?

Thanks everyone! Jack: the case and door panels are birch ply and the rest is pine.
Wayne: I was watching Dogfights on the History channel, love that show.

I have a soft spot for planes as well. I’m ex Air Force and also spent part of my life writing software for them.

The cabinet looks great. Good design. I hate painting too. If you have a paint gun, you might try colored lacquer. I have my local Sherwin Williams or PPG mix it for me. It dries very fast, so the finish is clean. You are also able to recoat very fast.

Thanks Chris. I have a cheap spray gun from Harbor Freight, but it doesn’t spray well (imagine that). I’d like to get a HVLP turbine system some day.
Wayne: That’s cool. My dad was an engineer at Wright Paterson AFB (sp?) in Ohio. My childhood dream was to fly jets, but my vision is terrible.

That’s a heck of a finishing schedule. It turned out great!
