Deck cooler made out of cedar pickets and 2×4s from big box. Tried to put my own stamp on it with the center panels standing proud. Pretty happy with how it turned out. Thanks.

You have reason to be happy – a good looking cooler. Nice touch with the drain on the end and brass to boot.

I’ve been thinking about making some of these for family out of old cedar cut and dried for 40 years by a late grandfather. Since I cannot replace any wood if wasted, do you have any insight into things you liked, didn’t like, wish you could redo?

Hmmm. That’s a good question. It’s a pretty simple project. I made the frame around the lid a little too tight and it sticks when I try to open it, so I would redo that if I could. I like both the look and the functionality of the lower shelf. Not everyone adds the shelf. Depending on how much wood and room you have, you might want to consider making it bigger, like this:

I’d also probably consider making a side board, although it’s not really necessary. Other than that, I’d probably just say measure three times, cut once? Good luck, and let me know if you have any specific questions.

Have your say...
