fly fishing panel for wooten desk

This was, to say the least, a monumental task !! I spent over a year completing this picture. It started when my brother, Kevin, who is a cabinetmaker, from Barrie, Ontario, Canada, phoned me and said ‘hey bro, could you make a veneered panel for my desk i am making ?? Before i new what i said, i said yes !! DOH !! Oh well, it was worth the challenge. It is a fold down writing, working surface for a Wooten Patten desk he made from English Brown Oak. He came across a massive plank of solid Oak from his wood supplier.

To make the panel, i had to make separate marquetry pictures and then cut them into a background veneer of White Ash. I used English Brown Oak, Walnut Burl, English Sycamore, Holly and various dyed veneers for the Brown Trout. Other woods i used were – maple, oak, lacewood, rosewood, rimu, and for the creel i used japenese ash called tamo. A beautiful veneer, like bubbles and water currents all rolled into a veneer!! the entire panel was pressed into my brand new vacuum press system i purchased just for the job. i have used this vacuum bag system for numerous jobs since, how did i ever get along without it!!

enjoy this one of a kind panel, back to the grind of mundane woodworking, ho hum !! just kidding !!

I agree with Devin—incredible!!
I think I’ve driven through Alliston before. Near Schomberg?

Do we get to see the entire desk?

maharg,
Excellent work as usual. You are right that veneer that the creel is made from is exceptional in its’ own right. The thing I like the most is the banding on the picture frame! I mean the attention to your detail work is incredible. Keep on keeping on!

Sincerely,
Ken McGinnis

Thanks for all the great comments, really appreciate them. MsDebbieP, i will try to get pictures of his completed desk soon, the picts he sent me via e-mail where not very clear. Alliston is west of Base Borden, I think. I used to work for a cabinetmaker outside of Lisle, just off the Airport road. This was from 80 to 83 ish. Tooo long ago!! My next undertaking is going to be a Federal period tambour desk in the style of John Seymour and sons from the Boston area around 1800. It will be from some crotch Honduran mahohany veneer i bought when my ship, the HMCS Yukon was in San Dieago around 91 or 92. Myself and another guy rented a car and drove to La Mirada ??, and stopped at a veneer supplier, with stacks of the good stuff as far as you could see. I was like Homer drolling over a box of donuts!! Bought a bundle of veneer with 24 matching sheets, each sheet is a average of 16” wide x 58” long. Over 160 square feet, probably worth about $1,000 to $1,500 dollars for the whole bundle. Paid around $250.00 back then!! The desk will have inlays on the tambours, in a drappery pattern. I will try to make all of the inlay bandings and inlays on the legs, drawere fronts and everywhere else. wish me luck !!
