My mother-in-law wanted a spice rack to set on her countertop. I thought about it for a while and decided that she had insufficient counter space, and plenty of wall space, so I decided to make a cabinet instead.
As I was making the cabinet I decided to try something different and made the door to be 8 individual picture frames.
It added a lot of work, but she said it was the best Christmas gift she had ever received (right in front of the father-in-law)!
Made entirely of red oak, with 180 degree hinges from the scrap bin at work. Used acrylic for the picture frames to preclude the danger of glass breaking whenever the pictures are changed out.
Each opening is square, to accommodate either portrait or landscape orientation of a 4×6 photo.
Since this was built with scraps, and I already had the stain on hand that matched their table, this project cost only about $12 for the acrylic sheet.
Mounted to the wall with a french cleat.
