In a few months I will be taking a class in carving to improve my meager efforts so far. After acquiring some very sharp and expensive tools I decided that I must give them the proper home. Since this is a traveling box, weight and strength had to be balanced. The main carcass is Cedar and the sides are a frame of white oak with a cherry weave (to minimize weight). The handle is oversize because in the future(after my carving class)it will be carved in the shape of a dragon head. Finish with 3 coats of oil and in a few weeks will be followed by a coat of bees wax. I am considering adding a shoulder strap in leather but so far I can not find such long piece as I need. This is an evolving project since I plan to do more carvings on the sides of this box.

Intriguing design, and very nicely done. I’d love to see the dragons when you’re done. Take a look at Earthly Leather Design on Etsy, by the way. They long leather strap belts, and are willing to do special orders. You could email and ask for a quote
