Did I mention I love the purpleheart and maple combination?! I built this jewelry box with music box movement awhile back for my best friend. It is constructed of purpleheart, bird’s eye maple and Bolivian rosewood.

All joints are mitered and the lid is a floating frame design. When the lid is raised, the music box movement is activated and an upper jewelry tray is revealed. The two lower drawers pivot outward from the corner. This was achieved by pinning them on a brass rod that runs from the upper tray facade to the base.

If I were to produce this again, I think I would look at using some form of hidden hinge for each drawer. It might be easier and it would clean up the gap at the left edge of the carcass. It wouldn’t be quite as intriguing, though.

Fantastic box. Love the swinging drawers. PurpleHeart and Maple are a very nice combo.

Keep up the imaginative work.

nice design i haven’t seen that before
i would stay with the pin and just round over the corner of the drawers you have a
winning combo there

Eddy, thanks for the tip on the drawers. I hadn’t thought of that. In the words of a Jimmy Buffett song, “It was simple, like the jitterbug. It plum evaded me!”

A great design, but I agree with you about the next box – you should try a hidden hinge.
