My daughters both go to the Univ. of S. Carolina, and cheer for the Gamecocks. They also both belong to the same sorority. So I made them some paddles with their names, sorority names, Grad year, and “Go ‘cocks” on the flip side, using the sign making kit from Rockler to rout the letters into the boards. Then I did a simple round-over on one side, and a round-over with a raised panel on the other side to make it easier to paint the different background colors. I’ll be taking them up to them when I visit for parents weekend on October 2nd and 3rd.
The hardest part was tracing and carving the handles, which I did on a scroll saw. It would have been nice to have a template to follow for that. Paddles cost about $25 at the local craft store, and that seemed like an expensive template. I guess you could trace it and take it back to the store. I tried using a protractor like a french curve. They came out OK.

Tim,
They look good, I never did any lettering at all, maybe that is something I should try.

very cool…but I must admit I will have a hard time if my daughters (now 2 and 6yrs) ask me for a wooden paddle and “go cocks” written on it…

Yeah, I hear what you’re saying! Of course, they didn’t ask, it’s for a surprise, but Columbia, SC is one of the few places that when you say that, everyone knows you’re talking football. And of course, many of the tee shirts, sweatshirts, hats etc. say the same thing, so you kinda gt used to it. Guess you’ll have to avoid letting your daughters go to school there.
They are Junior & Senior this year. It all seems pretty innocuous now. :)

Great job on those paddles, I love the Game cocks, because i was born and raised in Gamecock country and i work about 4 miles from the stadium. My sister also went to USC and she’s now a register nurse. I realy like your work it looks realy great.
