This kitchen island was made out of repurposed oak flooring. It features a butcher block top supported by 3 oak shelf supports. The butcher block top was once a table that someone was going to throw away. Being a proponent of repurposing wood, I could not let that happen. The framing is made of the flooring backed by 1/4” plywood. The base and shelves are made of 5/8” plywood and a 2”X4” kick board frame. As you can see in the second photo, the visible framing is made from the repurposed oak flooring. The tongues and grooves had to be removed and the irregular bottoms trimmed off. The panels are made of a white composite paneling for easy cleaning and durability. I did this because the recipient household has young children. l the Island is bolted in place and was made to enable the island to be taken with them when and if the house is sold.
