Ah my second ‘furniture’ piece and most recent. Soon after completing the blanket chest for my son, our good neighbor announced she was moving back home to Pittsburgh. She is a huge Pittsburgh Penguins and St Louis Blues hockey fanatic and loves hot air balloons. We live in a suburb of St Louis, so I combined ideas from all 3. I particularly am quite pleased how the StL skyline silhouette shows. The Penguins logo balloon in upper right. StL Blues balloon(tiny) to its left and of course we couldn’t forget the Energizer bunny. Used leftover 3/4 red oak from the blanket chest project. Learned that finishing with a 50/50 mix of polyurethane and mineral spirits applies nicely, next to zero ‘runs’ in finish. Less sanding between the last 3 coats. Though, I feel I might be installing the ribs on the lid as a “crutch” when I may not have needed them.
