I’ve finally finished my first real furniture project (something not made of MDF). I started with some plans from an issue of Wood magazine and made some changes along the way. It’s made from cherry with a sapele veneered panel in the top. There were a lot of firsts for me in the project.. first time doing mortise and loose tenons which worked out great. First time trying to spray a finish, which was a total disaster. I ended up going back to Arm-R-Seal wipe on finish in the end.

Mark, these are nice looking tables. You did a good job on the construction and the wood combination works well. I enjoyed seeing the grain and appearance of the sapele contrasted with the cherry. The finish looks good as well.
Nice job.

Thanks everyone for the comments and encouragement.
Chris,
I had tried spraying on a water based finish (hydrocote) with the low end Earlex sprayer (the 3000) and I’m guessing I just sprayed it on too thick and it dried with all kinds of cracks at the bottom. I ended doing a LOT of sanding to try and clean that up before moving to use a wipe on finish instead. I need some more practice before trying the spray gun again!

MarkJ: did you use the stock tip that came with the 3000? I’ve read that when using those you should use the smaller tips that you have to buy extra with it. Also, it could have been that you didn’t think the mix enough (just guessing though, you may have just sprayed it on to thick like you think). I don’t have one, but I’ve been doing a lot of research on them :)

Jimi, it came with 1.5 and 2.0 mm needles and I had used the 1.5mm. I haven’t given up on the spray gun yet. I’m thinking I may try some lacquer next instead of the water based stuff. It is just about the season to start making Christmas presents so hopefully I’ll have it figured out by then.

Mark, Beautiful tables! Gorgous wood and great craftsmanship. Your finish turned out great. Water base finishes can be a bugger-bear to spray, especially if you’re not used to spraying or used to your equipment. Try a regular nitrocellous lacquer next time. It’s pretty easy to work with, dries fast, easy to touch up or repair and works well with either a conventional compressor or HVLP. Feel free to pm me if you need any help.

Great job, I really want to make something out of Cherry. Every time I look at it in the lumber yard and shy away from it. I am not familiar with sapele , looks like to face matched these, nice job! The Grain Orientation is well thought out as well. The taper in the legs softens them up nicely. Great job! I remember the article on these tables.
