First wooden plane

A piece of advice to all you aspiring plane builders… Don’t think “Oh, I can just make this… who needs plans?”

There’s a whole host of things wrong with this, which is probably why I haven’t shared it after making it close to a year ago… first off, it doesn’t work. And when I say it doesn’t work, I don’t mean it doesn’t work well, I mean it doesn’t work at all…

For some reason, no matter how well I set that wedge, as soon as the blade meets any resistance, (and because the angle of the blade is completely wrong, believe me there’s resistance!) the wedge pops out.

There’s no place to actually put your hand on the back end of it, because I would have to grind the iron down about 2 inches, and I wasn’t about to wreck a perfectly good plane iron on a useless plane.

Maple, cherry and purpleheart…

The best looking non-working plane I have ever seen.

Don’t be ashamed of it. I have early projects around the house that are benchmarks to show how far I have come in my woodworking skills. Every project contains a volume of lessons learned and skills refined.

Looks good . Just your comments shows you have learned a lot in building this plane the next one will be most improved I’m sure.

Love it… Joe, “that’s the Prettiest piece of crap I have seen!”

Next, I’m going to actually follow a plan and build another one, of course!

I’ll modify whatever I find to fit the plane iron… you’ll see another one one of these days.

You’re all right, of course. It’s a learning experience. You can’t be ashamed of your work, you just have to remember why you messed up, and make it better the next time!

Ryno, I’m really surprised that no one on here has offered you some more encouragement rather than telling you it is crap.
Shame.

There is no reason why you can’t make that plane work. Make a new wedge that fits tighter and when you put it in, tap it gently with a hammer. Make sure the blade is set a bit back from the opening. Then tap the blade down to get your depth of cut, this will also make the wedge tighter.
To use it, use a pull stroke and as you pull, put your index finger on the back of the wedge and you should be getting nice cuts in no time.

I have several small wooden planes and by far prefer using a pull stroke. The blade won’t be in the way that way. It looks great and its not crap. I have seen far worse stuff posted on this forum that people think are the greatest things. At least you admit the shortcomings and are willing to try again, but that said, I don’t think this one is a total loss yet. Give it a try. It’s too nice a plane not to.

For your next one, a fellow on this forum sent me some plans for wooden hand planes with dimensions and all. I’d like to pay it forward and offer those to you too. If your interested, PM me and I’ll e-mail you the plans he sent me.

Have you not tried to work out why it does not work? I would inspect the angle of cut and adjust from there with shims if needed. These planes never work unless you set them up proerly it might take time but should work well with a little effort.Unless you have no edge on the blade LOL Alistair

Um I think you are using a block plane blade right? Well flip it upside down because right now you have an effective working angle of 70 degrees and if you flip it over it will be normal 45 or whatever the bed is.

i still think this is a sweet little plane u should just try to change the angle of the blade and i bet it will work try i would if i had a bandsaw to make those nice curves.

Ike,

I don’t have a bandsaw either… I used table saw for the rough cuts and finished the curves with my belt sander.
