Box with secret compartment

This box is made from some walnut I’ve had kicking around my shop for many years and some mystery pallet wood. The hinges are concealed barrel hinges my father gave me. The box has a secret drawer that is activated by lifting one of the internal panels. The secret drawer mechanism is based off of a design from a youtuber Dustin Penner. nice build, how does the secret compartment work though? is it a push and release mechanism?

There is a spring in the back of the box that constantly pushes out on the drawer. Initially I used a small piece of aluminum that would be pushed down to release the drawer when the inside panel is flipped around. (Notice the pin is inset into one side of that panel)

I’ve found that the drawer was somewhat angled so I have added a small block in the corner that will catch the pin on the right side and hold the drawer in.
If I build another one in the future I will skip using the alu.inum catch and just use 2 pins that will catch into holes on both sides of the front of the drawer and will allow the spring to push it out when the pins are pulled free of the holes in the drawer.

Nice work, good concealment of the secret drawer.

very cool box! I love the cloak and dagger builds lol. Whenever something has a unique feature like that, it makes it so much more fun to build don’t you think? Nicely done.
