Computer Desk

Project by Jim posted 61 days ago 366 views 0 times favorited 6 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Relatively simple computer desk. Made to fit into a space, hence the narrowness. Keyboard drawer pulls out and then its front folds down—a nice piece of hardware from Rockler. Because the kb pulls out, the space under the desk top has a shelf for the cpu and printer, and still has enough room for the user’s knees! Oak ply and solid oak. Minwax stain and poly topcoat.

I like that a lot! You did a great job and the finish looks great. That is a neat keyboard feature from Rockler too. What did you use for your edge banding?

Vicki, edge banding is always a challenge. I used 3/8” oak on the desktop to edge the plywood and mitered the corners. But I used iron-on edge tape for the shelves. I usually use 1/4” thick edging because it has enough give to clamp tightly and make a nice joint and the edges can then be rounded. I just made a table top out of mahogany plywood that was edged with 2 1/2” wide teak. Getting the ply and the teak tight was not fun. Contrasting woods and grains really show the joint whereas all oak is relatively forgiving.
I did spend a fair amount of time on the finishing. Thanks for noticing. I don’t like finishing but I wanted to take my time and try to improve my finishing skills.
