Like the approach on the rustic look. The end joints with what appears to be saw marks is interesting. Way to think outside the box. Love the wood peg joints as well
Great Job!

Very cool! I really like the rustic look. It goes with the brick very nice.

So, what did you use to brace it and how much weight do you think it supports? I have a similar situation that I have been contemplating for years. It does have a mantle, but made of field rock… and I would like to do something like this.

We screwed a 2×6 to the front of the chimney extended all the way to the inside of the sides turn-backs. Then we ran 2×6 from the front 2×6 to the wall and anchored it. Then we put the mantel turn-backs up and screwed them from the inside thru the 2×6 into the cherry. The turn-back of the mantel against the wall was screwed in and hidden by the square plug. After the sides were secure the front was side in place and secured. Strips were put inside to support the walnut top and bottom. this will hold every bit of 150 lbs. The owner hung on it with most of his weight and it flexed just a bit.
