A couple of months back, I acquired some Walnut.
This project was cut from a “Y” branch. Not quite a crotch, but gave me another first to put in the turning portfolio. Turned from semi-green, to 3/16” thickness…(for the most part) Measures 9” by 8” at the wings. About 1 3/4” high. A couple of coats of wipe-on-Polly at this point. Will put on a couple more over the next few days.
Things I learnt…. when sanding Walnut, the darker dust will get into the sap wood and cloud it up fast. .... I didn’t like that at all.
Turning wings is much easier at a good speed.
Fun…...is turning Walnut; Nice wood.

This is a very cool project. I love walnut and these color contrasts don’t dissapoint. I really enjoy how the bowl is coming out of the slab, nice idea and nice execution!

The more I look at it the more I like it. Nice wood, good turning. How did you fix/avoid the dark/light issue?

Brian, this “turned” out wonderfully. I like the color contrast with the sap wood in the walnut that you used for this project.
Nice job.

WOW. I like that bowl. I have several segented bowls glued up to turn like that with the wings. One of these days I’ll turn them.

That is really nice. I really like how you did the bottom. Did you do the top first or the bottom?

Loucarb… The bottom is first rough shaped (on a screw chuck) and a tenon added to mount in a 4 jaw chuck. Revers…..and chuck….Then the wings are completed, and the bowl hollowed out. Reverse chuck on a jam and do the finishing of the bottom of the piece….remove tenon and such.

Fantastic turning. Great design and execution. Walnut is the best in my opinion. With the sapwood to give the darker heart wood such a lovely contrast, this piece is just fantastic.
Keep up the outstanding work.
