Here is a collection of 3 small Maple Scrap Wood bowls. Biggest is only 4 inch around and 1 3/4 tall. Smallest is 2 inch around and 1 3/4 tall. Turned from a single piece of cut off about 6×8 x 1 7/8.
Started with the small one. Turned complete. Went to the middle one next. First thing I did was turn the opening to be a good fit for the bottom of the small one. Then turned the outside and hollowed out the inside to a 1/4 wall. Same process on the big one. First the opening to fit, then the rest of it.
This was a different project from the beginning….........What is hideing ??
OH LOOK! IT’s A SNOWMAN!!!
HAHA Thought I would have a little fun there.
Used a piece of (you guesed it) SCRAP walnut for the hat and “Coal”
Also Tiny piece of Scrap Paduk for the carrot.
Had to sharpen the tools several times on this project. Never turned Hard Maple before. It was a challenge to keep the tare-out down. Also it wanted to heat up real bad when sanding.
All in all this was a lot of fun to do. Although it would be a LOT easier with a chuck. Sometimes a Jam Chuck just does not want to cooperate very well. Have a couple more of these laid out and ready to cut the circles. in a couple of pieces of Ash. Hope it turns out a little whiter then the maple did. (don’t eat the dirty snow!)haha
Hope you all enjoyed looking. Please leave all comments and suggestions/critiques. I am allways trying to improve and your comments help.
Thank You for looking.

Nice work Scrappy! This is one of my favorite bowl shapes. I made quite a few like them in my earlier turning days out of birch. Yours are smaller, but I think they look better proportioned than mine. The maple also has a nicer grain which really enhances the overall appearance. Keep at it, you’re a natural turning talent.

Ugh! That 4 letter word – snow! Hate it!! Last night we had frost in parts of the state…it’s not even the first day of Autumn yet…(sigh)
Love these though!! Lookin’ good Scrappy!

Scrappy nice turning only 2 things(just helping) tjhe bottoms made the rebate smaller acording to the turnings about 30% yours are a bit big almost to the whole bottom, the finial is very dificult to make if you dont have the rigth tools I almost never make them,(no small gouges )and just like in everything turn turn, also check the web for andy wolf and others they are very good making finnials, see the woodturning videos in youtube you will learn new ways and see how other turners make things and advices,I ussually espend few hours a day surfing the web looking at turners, this is a good place to start,it has turner from all over the world, after you enter go to links and then to turners they are some 1500 there lol

Thank You veryone for the great comments. Sorry I didn’t answer sooner. (thought I allready had) haha.
Peruturner, Thanks for the info. Will be checking out the link and doing some more web searching. Allways on the lookout for more info. On these the bottem rebate is as large as it is to accomidate being the lid for the next smaller bowl. Will keep an eye on this on future projects.
Squirt, Your stash is safe…....for now…...hehehehe
Stefang, The sizes on these were determined by the piece of scrap I had. so if they are better proportioned, it was an accident. haha Wanted them all out of the same piece of scrap so just made 3 circles fit on the wood.
Sory everyone about that four letter word. SNOW! I live in the desert! It don’t snow here! haha
Glad you all liked it. Tried to keep you guesing on what this was untill the end.
Thanks Again.
