Storage Bed

This is a bed that I just finished for my youngest son. It has 7 large drawers all 13” tall, 26” wide and 24” deep (the foot drawer is 30” deep). The head and foot board are 2” mahogany and the raised panels are 3/4. The drawers are fitted fairly tight with solid wood runners on the drawers, with wax they work very smooth and easy. The drawer frame sections rest on a ledge on the head and foot with a stop in the center that lines things up. There are 3 #14 screws at each corner to attach the frames to the head/ foot. The drawers look to be on the ground but are 3/4 off so all is supported on the corners as the floor is never level. It is easy to line up, put together, and break down. The drawer boxes are 1/2 birch plywood. The drawer frames are poplar with pocket screws and are very rigid and straight. It looks and works very well. When screwed together it is perfectly square and will not rack at all.

Nicely done. My compliments.

I like the idea a lot. I have been thinking of making one my self. What size is the bed?

Absolutely awesome build. I have 3 bedroom set on the slate for this year and they include raised beds with drawers. You choice and combinations of woods are beautiful. What is the lighter colored wood? I would love
to see more on how you constructed the bed. Again, great job!

Not criticizing at all, but wondering why the center towards the head is empty. Drawers could have been deeper? It is a great job and I also want to build one (added to “Favorites”).

I’ve been working on a similar platform bed for a long time (seems like forever). I wish I had seen yours first. You did a splendid job! Mine is just a double bed so there is no center drawer at the end of the bed and I made ten drawers (eight shallow and two deep ones) that are all 26” deep (front-to-back). You made good use of the center portion for the king-sized bed. I hope mine will look 1/10th as good when I’m finished.

Thanks all. Gary it is a California king. James, sorry all I have is these that I took with my phone on final assembly in the shop before delivery. Kurt all visible wood is mahogany, the drawer frames are popular, and the drawer boxes are 1/2 birch plywood. kajunkraft the center is open because the bed is built in 4 sections (head and foot, two drawer frame boxes) plus the drawers so as to facilitate break down and transport.

Really nice design. Great work.

I’ve been thinking of building one of these for some time as a California King, but I’m a little concerned even as a 4+ piece design it would be tough to get it around a 180 degree bend in our stairs leading to the master.
