Hi Everyone,
This is my inaugeral posting having just joined Lumberjocks.
The blanks for these Celtic-knot pens are made with 6 laminations. Each involves cutting a slot at a 45º angle most of the way through the blank then gluing in a sliver of contrasting wood the exact width of the saw kerf. The balnk is then reutrned to the lathe and the insert turned flush with the blank. Back to the bandsaw for another slot, then glue then turn, etc. The first batch of 6 blanks took me 3 hours to produce with much of the time taken thinning the wood slivers to fit the saw cut. For the second batch, I found some thick veneer the perfect thickness for the saw cut and was able to make 12 blanks in 2 1/2 hours. I made both fountain and rollerball versions of the pen and they have been well received. The pens shown are cocobolo with maple inserts and maple with cocobolo inserts. They were finished with Lee Valley’s Turners Polish (padding lacquer).

I finally see the repeating ellipse!!! Never could figure out the secret other than incredible amounts of inlay. The light shines on even the dimest at times. Thanks for posting. BTKS
