I wanted to try out my new spline jig so I put this box together for the wife’s birthday. These are my first keyed spline joints. Its my first mitered box as well, for which I cut on my new miter joint jig built from a YouTube video by Steve Ramsey of Woodworking for Mere Mortals.

The riser medallion was somewhat of a challenge but worked my way through until I found what I liked. I decided to use a hinged door on top, with trays that lift out. For versatility the small dividers in the trays are removable.

The mirror in the top of the lid was an after thought. I routed the trim work with beaded edge on the router table before cutting them to size.

The over-all size of this box is 13” x 8” and 7-1/2” tall. Finished with 3 coats of natural danish oil and 3 coats of lacquer.

Box is made of maple, cherry and walnut.

Thanks for looking.
